Gossen Starlite Light Meter
Features in Detail
The Starlite is Gossen's all-in-one top of the line light
meter offering unrivaled capabilities and multiple functions.
Three individual meters are specially incorporated into this one
precision-measuring instrument:
- An exposure meter for ambient and flash
- A CINE meter for filming
- A light measuring instrument for illumination
intensities and luminances
This all-in-one meter provides a complete package of features
for standard and those special requirements of the photographer
in the studio or on location. A durable water-resistant housing
protects the meter safely in inclement weather or risky
situations. Attractively styled, this meter is comfortable in
shape and size to hold and operate. The simple operating
controls, which are logically positioned, makes the meter easy
to understand and use both for the experienced professional and
the dedicated amateur.
Gossen Starlite Light Meter Key Features

Ambient light: Incident light measurement f/stop
priority |
- Multifunctional Swivel Head
- A remarkable advantage is the rotary measuring swivel
head, a multiple function optical center. The rotary ring at
the base of the diffuser can be set at four different modes:
- Reflected light measurement of a 1 degree angle
through the viewfinder
- Quick selection at the ring enables the meter to
alternate to a 5 degree angle
- Incident light measurement: with raised diffuser =
spherical characteristics
- Incident light measurement: with lowered diffuser =
flat plane characteristics
Consequently, the Starlite offers unparalleled
versatility of measuring capabilities, including the Zone
System. Flash measurements are automatically selected for
cord or non-cord functions. For cord flash measurements, a
flash sync terminal is conveniently placed on the meter
front. Optional radio controlled triggering is a highly
practical feature for the professional. In addition, a
multiple flash mode is incorporated for evaluating and
calculating up to 9 flashes.
- Universal Functioning Meter for Photography, Cine
Filming and Specialized Technical Light Measuring
Applications
- The pre-selected data and the measuring results are
indicated in the large and easy to read display. Functions
not currently selected are not visible, eliminating false
interpretations or misunderstandings on the display. Four
DIP switches in the battery compartment are provided to
select the desired function group:
- Selection of still photography, CINE filming or
photometric functions
- Selection of the full shutter speed values or
alternatively the half step values. Also input of
additional speeds for CINE
- Selection of the various photometric measuring units
- Selection of the Zone System measuring functions

Flash: ambient light measurement, additional reading of
the ambient light share |
- All measuring Methods Are Available
-
- Shutter speed priority -- the corresponding f/stop
aperture will be displayed
- F/stop -- aperture priority -- the corresponding
shutter speed will be displayed
- Exposure value/EV -- can be directly used with
certain MF lenses
- Contrast measurements -- the brightness range of the
subject is determined
- Averaging -- the average value of up to nine single
measurements can be calculated and shown in the display
- Zone System measurements -- areas of different
brightness are assigned to graduated Zones of gray
- The Starlite Meter for CINE Filming and Photometry
- By using the corresponding DIP switch, the Starlite can
be converted easily and quickly into a fully functional,
comprehensive CINE meter for Motion Picture Filmmakers. For
those photographers who need a competitive edge, a preset
shutter angle of 180º can be adjusted in 10 step increments.
The Starlite is remarkably well equipped for precise
photometric measurements of light intensities, illumination
and luminance in ambient light or flash modes. The metering
results are indicated in the display in LUX, Footcandle,
cd/m2, Foodlambert, and more.
- Water Resistant Housing With Rubberized Edges
- Water resistant housing with rubberized edges ensure a
comfortable and secure hold.
- Automatic Background Illumination
- Automatic background illumination of display at low
light levels.
- Shutter Speeds Exposure Times In Full Standard Or Half
Step Values
- Second ISO Film Speed (Polaroid Value) Capacity
- Based on the measuring result obtained for the ISO 1
setting, the corresponding values for ISO 2 will be
automatically calculated and displayed.
- True Zone System Measurements and Direct Readout on the
Zone Scale
- Innovative Design
- The Starlite in Cine mode is an innovatively designed
meter for light measuring requirements, including but not
limited to angles of 180º. Direct selection and adjustments
eliminate the need for lengthy calculations.
- Photometric Function Group
- In the photometric function group, capacities are
provided for measuring light intensities and luminances, for
ambient light and/or flash mode. Units of measurements and
ranges are found in the specifications below.
