Gossen Sixon Exposure meter

Gossen Sixon exposure meter

The Sixon is an extremely sensitive, accurate and versatile photoelectric exposure meter. It shows the precise combinations of aperture and shutter speeds. The possibility of choosing either of the two measuring methods, i.e. reflected or incident light measurement ensures optimum results for still and cine and photography.

Known are different versions of the Sixon, The Sixon, The Sixon CF and the Sixon Dual. Actually it the same meter but the CF has the Color Finder added. The Color Finder is mounted inside one of the sides of the meter opposite of the knurled knob. while the Sixon is just the plain meter without the CF. It looks like the Sixon Dual is the American version of the CF this because of the fact that most of the Dual versions can be found in the US and the film sensitivity scale only has the ASA setting. Dual is in relation to the two functions of the equipment, the Light Meter and the Color Finders functions.

there are also differences on the back of the meter, some have a Filter table, some have a Din, ASA, Weston and Europ. Scheiner conversion scale.

The Sixon has been made in different versions, The Sixon with metal sides, the Sixon with black plastic sides, the Sixon with a color finder, the dual Sixon  and also a version for Sears like the one with black plastic sides but without the name Gossen on the chain clip.

Sixon with metal sides, I think the standard Sixon.

Sixon Dual, ??.
Sixon Color Finder, Sixon with the color finder mounted.
Tower (Sixon) version, a Sixon meter sold by Sears under their brand Tower.

Different versions of Sixon meters.

Looking at the front of the meter, there are to my knowledge no real differences except for the logo. The Sixon Color finder has a logo that is flat while all the other meters have a logo in relief.

looking at the film speed knob there are meters with a scale 6 ~ 400 ASA / 9 ~ 27 DIN and also meters with a film speed 12 ~ 800 ASA / 12 ~ 30 DIN.

looking at the back of the meters there you will find on most meters a film speed conversion table DIN - ASA BS - Weston - Europ. Scheiner. Some tables are engraved in the mold and some have a aluminum plate glued at the back. You find a lot of meters missing the plate on the back because during time the glue did not stick and the plate got lost.

The Sixon Dual De Luxe has a table on the back also molded. The table is a calculation table for the roller curtain open or closed. Also the film speed only in ASA with a dual scale with black and red values. one scale (black) goes from 5 to 200 and the red scale goes from 8 to 125. Since the Sixon Dual only has ASA value on the film speed knob, this meter must be made only for the USA market because all other countries use either ASA or DIN and both of these values appears on meters.

The Tower Sixon is the same as the Dual Sixon De Luxe except for the sides. The tower has black plastic sides and a different chain with no name on the clip.

the Sixon with the black plastic sides is the same as the Sixon with the Metal sides.

The Sixon Color Finder has also a metal plate on the back. Some of them have a film speed conversion table ranging from 12 to 30 DIN while the Sixon has a range from 9 to 27 DIN other meters have a Color finder color conversion table on the back instead of the film speed table.

This is as far as I found out maybe there are still other versions in the wild!

The technical parts of the meter are actually very simple made. The meter consists of a small volt meter, a selenium cell and 2 wires. The selenium cell is squeezed between a plastic matrix with 2 contacts connecting to the front connections of the selenium cell and a bended metal plate making contact with the back of the selenium cell.
The matrix with the contacts and the metal plate are connected to the meter by 2 wires. That's all. When light falls on the selenium cell, it generates a little power. Because of this power a very small current runs trough the circuit making the meter to move a little bit. When more light falls on the cell more power is generated and more current is running trough the circuit making the meter mover further.

The Sixon is also sold under the name Tower, a brand name from Sears as " Sears finest Tower exposure meter"

Setting of the film speed is very easy, just pres the knurled screw in the middle of the film speed scale and turn the speed dial in such a manner, the correct film speed is set at the black index dot. release the knurled screw and the knob and cylinder will lock in place.

De film speed cylinder is just a kind of film speed calculator. When measuring the light, reflected or incident, the meter needle points to a curtain number on de scale. Turn the white knob until the number in the little square is equal to the number of the scale the needle is pointing to. Now  read the aperture value that's shows up under the required shutter speed and that's it.
